On the map you’ll find Phyllis’s Corner is really called Fishers Bush. It’s a small layby on the bend of the Shore Road from Glencaple towards Caerlaverock. It was named after a local resident Phyllis Laurie who lived on the shore of the Nith until she died in 1942 at the age of 72. Her cottage is named as Hags Cottage on local maps and after being burned to the ground, not much remains. Phyllis was a bit of a character and liked to dress in black with a cloak, the look of a witch according to local children of the time.
If you decide to go on the hunt for the remains of Phyllis’s cottage why not stop off at The Boathouse first? Make sure you have had something to eat and snacks for the trip.
