Caerlaverock translated is literally Castle of the Lark and when most people hear the name they will think of our famous castle. First built in the 13th century it is the only triangular castle in Scotland. It is the seat of the Clan Maxwell and was pivotal in many battles against the English. It was last occupied in 1640 after thirteen weeks against a besieging army of Covenanters. Substantial damage was caused during and after the seige and the castle stands as it was left in that year. Caerlaverock Castle was placed in state care in 1946 and is now looked after by Historic Environment Scotland.
But Caerlaverock has so much more history than just our castle! Being part of the Dumfries Harbour means there is a strong history of ships, smuggling and piracy. Robert Burns worked here during his time as an excise man. Sandstone from the quarry in Bankend would have been sent all over the world.
Caerlaverock’s location on the mouth of the Solway makes it the perfect home for an amazing array of wildlife. It is also the winter resting place of the Barnacle Geese who arrive in their thousands. If you ever get the chance to see the dawn flight of the geese, please don’t turn it down. Around every corner is a postcard moment, sitting in the shadow of Criffel and next to the River Nith, it really is a magical place.
