The Blackshaw is a small village in the parish of Caerlaverock seated on the coast of the Solway Firth, near the mouth of the Lochar river. Blackshaw Flats is a sandy tract which makes up part of The Merse. It is now covered by the sea but is mentioned in historic writings as once being the site of a forest. Follow the Blackshaw road to find the Wetland Reserve, a beautiful 1400 acre reserve which hosts thousands of wildfowl in winter, including barnacle geese and whooper swans. The entire Svalbard breeding population spends its winter on the Solway and can be seen from the many hides and towers along the Blackshaw. You can learn more about the reserve and the geese from the Wildlife & Wetlands Trust website.
